The morning greeted Reese as she lazily opened her eyes and immediately stared at the warm sunlight filtering through the window. The eastern sunrise may not touch her west-facing window so early in the morning, but what light she received still blinded her â she almost didnât realize that it was her ringing phone that jerked her out of a sweet dream about Kimberly wearing lacy lingerie.
Now thereâs a thought. Reese searched for her phone while continuing to entertain sordid fantasies of a woman named Kimberly Kim. I bet she would be like an unholy angel in a white negligee and robe. Wonder if she would let me fuck her with her own halo. Reese still had yet to treat her girlfriend to the dirtiest fantasies emerging between them. It didnât help that she proved to be as interested in giving as well as giving.
âAw, fuck.â Reese barely made out her brotherâs name and number on her lock screen. âWhat is it?â
Her brother was not amused with how tired she was. Or how early it was⦠both there, and back in San Francisco.
âItâs Mom.â
Reese shot up in her bed. What was that? Had someone slapped her in the face? âWhat about Mom?â Suddenly, she was more awake than if a bomb had gone off outside her window.
âShe relapsed last night,â her brother said matter-of-factly. âSheâs back in the hospital. Thought you might want to know, though Dad told me it wasnât any of your business since you moved toâ¦â
âWhat hospital?â Reese was out of bed, heart thundering in her chest and feet tripping over each other. âWhat happened, Nic?â
âWhat is there to say? Dad and I got home late last night and found her passed out like it was summer of â69. You know her fucking drill. She comes home from the halfway house acting like everythingâs gonna be fine, then bam! First chance she gets, she bribes one of the assistants to bring her five bottles of Jack.â
Reese froze in the bedroom doorway. âIs she okay, though?â
âI honestly donât know. Dadâs still at the hospital with her. She wasnât breathing very well when we found her. Theyâve pumped her stomach, but I think the worst had already hit.â
The phone almost fell from Reeseâs hand. âHow can you be so fucking casual about it?â
âCâmon, sis. You know itâs not the first time itâs happened.â
âStill, do you have to be so callous?â She didnât mean to sound so shrill that early in the morning. Freaking out and yelling at her brother didnât stop their mother from being an alcoholic. I canât stop thinking about it. About the last time she was in the hospital.
This would be Meredithâs fifth relapse in three years. The condo, the move to Oregon was supposed to change everything⦠didnât she know that she only had to wait a little longer? Everything would be perfect. Everything infused with her daughterâs love and hopes for recovery. That was the plan.
Why did plans always come unraveling when it was about that woman!
âThatâs our mother,â Reese said.
